Emirati Dubai Sports Council Ambassadors

Football, Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Skateboarding, Parkour and Street Workout Champions to Scout for Future Sports Stars at the UAE’s Largest Indoor Summer Sports Venue

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A star-studded roster of leading Emirati, Arab world and expatriate sports personalities will be keeping an eye out for emerging talent during this summer’s landmark fifth edition of Dubai Sports World 2015 (DSW), the UAE’s largest indoor summer sports venue.

Dubai Sports Council has contributed five Emirati sporting stars to the line-up of DSW 2015 ambassadors including UAE national team footballers, Ahmed Khalil and Habib Al Fardan; UAE national basketball team playmaker, Talal Musabbah Mater Al Dhaheri; UAE national handball player, Abdullah Al Baloshi; and female badminton icon and local sports pioneer, Mona Al Sahlawi. The final three ambassadors include Egyptian Hesham Kamel, a Parkour and Street Workout instructor for UAE-based urban movement organisation, Against GraviTi, and RAGE Team Skate Riders, Lawrence Jokum and Kareen Nassar.

As part of their participation at this year’s 10-week DSW, which runs from June 21st to August 29th at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the ambassadors will make regular scouting trips to the multi-sport facility to identify the most promising youth players taking part in numerous sports across the 22,000m², fully air-conditioned, indoor venue.

The group will assess children of all ages and ethnicities including youngsters enrolled in academy concepts running seasonal training programmes, and others playing socially with friends. The most promising youngsters will be invited to take part in a ‘Final Trial’, after which the Emirati sports stars will crown various winners as the ‘DSW Stars of 2015’.

“Dubai Sports World provides world-class sports facilities for the city’s multinational community to remain active during the summer months,” said His Excellency Saeed Mohamed Harib, General Secretary, Dubai Sports Council. “As part of our vision to promote a healthy community, we’ve enlisted the support of the some of the UAE’s most successful champions to engage with children and be positive role models. Our line-up of Dubai Sports Council ambassadors are some of the country’s most successful sportspeople and there’s no-one better to judge the stars of tomorrow than the stars of today.”

Recruiting the ambassadors to champion grassroots health and fitness initiatives represents the latest evolution in DWTC’s long-term DSW partnership with Dubai Sports Council. For five consecutive years, the two entities have collaborated on a series of co-operative, community-centric fitness programmes to aid the Government of Dubai in developing the emirate’s sports sector.

“Having attracted more than 175,000 sports fans last year, we are well aware of the tremendous talent coming through our doors every summer,” said Ahmed Alkhaja, Senior Vice President, Venues, DWTC. “Nevertheless, the ambassador initiative with our partners at Dubai Sports Council represents the first time we have embarked on a talent-recognition programme of this scope. As the region’s largest and most dynamic multi-sport venue, Dubai Sports World is a wonderfully diverse platform for sports authorities to identify the next generation of UAE-based sports stars.”

Having won numerous regional and continental tournaments across various age groups for the UAE’s youth sides, football star Ahmed Khalil – who also played in the UAE’s history-making Under-23 team at the 2012 London Olympic Games - is arguably the most well-known ambassador. The 23-year-old UAE national team striker, who plays for Al Ahli Dubai FC in the Arabian Gulf League, is excited about engaging with the next generation of home-grown UAE sports stars.

“In terms of its progression in sport, the UAE has come a long way in a very short space of time,” said Khalil. “Our country’s visionary leaders have built a very strong infrastructure of world-class sports facilities to aid the development and progression of local talent. Even with all the progress, the summer temperatures pose a problem for people who normally exercise outside – so it’s fantastic to have a venue like Dubai Sports World offering so many different sports to unite the cosmopolitan community of Dubai. I’m looking forward to seeing our best young talent get their game on.”

This year’s DSW features four pro-standard pitches for five-a-side football, four pro-standard pitches for seven-a-side football and rugby, four basketball courts, two tennis courts, six badminton courts, a mini cricket pitch nets, an Olympic-length 400-metre running track and a regulation-sized volleyball court. An expansive skate-boarding and BMX park designed by extreme sports and recreation retailers, RAGE, will boast ramps, rails, pipes and verts, while a state-of-the-art gym by TechnoGym will feature world-class weights and fitness equipment. For the first-time, the gym area will include a dedicated fitness studio for group classes and a cycling studio operated by Fitness First.

In addition, DSW welcomes its first-ever dedicated Parkour obstacle course by Against GraviTi and the Wire World Adventure Park featuring a Mobile Rope Course and Bungee Trampoline. Elsewhere, a free-to-enter Entertainment Zone will feature 12 table tennis tables and a virtual Gaming Zone, while a special ‘activation area’ has been earmarked for one-off events and consumer-facing sponsor activations.

Organised in association with Dubai Sports Council, DSW boasts an impressive roll-call of leading local authorities and international lifestyle partners.
